Development Delays: Here’s How Our Early Intervention Program Program Can Help
Not all children grow and learn at the same pace. Some simply need extra support to catch up with their milestones. At Kidz Steps Centre, our Early Intervention Program is designed to provide individualized support for young children with delays, starting as early as 2.5 years old. Our program addresses a range of developmental challenges, helping children overcome obstacles and progress with confidence. Here are some of the key areas we cover in our EIP program:
Self-Help Skills (Including Toilet Training)
A common concern for parents is their child’s difficulty with basic self-help tasks like dressing, eating with a spoon, brushing teeth, or using the toilet. These essential life skills can be challenging for children with delays due to underdeveloped motor skills and difficulty following instructions. In our Early Intervention Program, our teachers provide patient guidance to help children with delays gradually master these tasks, fostering independence in everyday activities such as dressing and toilet training.
Play Skills
Children with developmental delays often struggle to engage in play, whether it’s with toys, imaginative play, or group activities. They may not know how to play appropriately for their age or how to interact with peers during playtime. Through structured role-play and guided play sessions, we help children explore different play activities and learn how to join in with others. These experiences build social confidence and teach cooperative play, which is crucial for early social development.
Emotional Regulation
Emotional regulation can be especially challenging for young children with delays, leading to frequent meltdowns and outbursts. Parents often feel unsure how to help their child cope with frustration. In our Intervention Program, we incorporate behavior therapy to teach children simple techniques for staying calm when things don’t go as expected. Over time, children learn to manage their emotions more effectively, reducing meltdowns and helping them adapt better to daily life.
Attention and Focus
Many young children with delays have trouble focusing on tasks or activities, becoming easily distracted. This can impact both their early learning and playtime. Our Early Intervention Program includes specially designed attention-building games and physical activities that cater to young children’s short attention spans. These activities gradually improve their concentration, making it easier for them to engage in learning or play for longer periods.
Speech & Language Skills
Speech and language development is another area of concern for many parents. Some children with delays can express basic needs or wants. But they may struggle with following instructions, answering questions, or asking them. This can hinder their ability to communicate effectively in social situations or in preparation for kindergarten. Our Intervention Program includes speech activities that teach children how to follow instructions and answer simple questions like ‘who,’ ‘what,’ and ‘where.’ We also encourage children to express their feelings and thoughts, which improves both their language skills and their confidence in communication.
Since 2014, we have been offering our Early Intervention Program to children with delays, continuously refining it to better meet their needs. Over the years, we have successfully helped children with developmental delays make significant progress. If you’re seeking support for your child’s developmental challenges, we’re here to help.
