Supporting Autism Through After-School Activities Program

Children with autism often require ongoing support even after attending school, whether in a mainstream or special needs setting. Schools primarily help children adapt to structured group learning environments and develop academic skills. However, teachers may not have the time to focus on helping children build social skills, problem-solving skills, conversation skills, time management, or independent skills. As a result, many children with autism benefit from continued assistance to address these areas. Our after-school activities program is suitable for most of the children with autism.

Why Continued Support is Crucial

As children with autism progress, they encounter new challenges that require specialized support:

  • Conversation Skills: Engaging in meaningful, two-way communication.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Navigating everyday challenges effectively.
  • Conflict Management: Resolving disagreements and understanding perspectives.
  • Time Management: Planning and organizing tasks efficiently.
  • Life Skills: Developing essential skills such as managing money, personal hygiene, and ensuring personal safety.

These skills are often not fully addressed during early interventions such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, or Early Intervention Programs (EIP), and are mostly not covered by schools. This makes an autism after-school program an excellent platform to bridge the gap and prepare children for adolescence and independence.

Success Stories from Our Autism After-School Program

Jason’s Journey

Jason, a 9-year-old boy attending PPKI, struggled with communication, social interactions, and independence. His mother’s goals for him included improving his ability to hold short conversations, manage personal tasks like homework, and make appropriate decisions for events like birthday parties. Jason also needed help managing his emotions, as he would easily cry when things did not go his way.

Through speech activities targeting communication and social skills training to foster independence, Jason has shown significant progress. He is now more engaged in conversations and demonstrates better emotional regulation.

Kelly’s Progress

Kelly, a 5-year-old attending kindergarten, faced challenges with behavior, school readiness, and social interaction. Her mother’s goals were for Kelly to stay calm when things didn’t go as planned, remain focused on tasks, and interact more with peers. By participating in our playgroup and weekly one-on-one sessions, Kelly has improved significantly. Within three months, she began staying calm and interacting with others during play with supportive guidance.

Flexible Scheduling

Our autism after-school program is flexible to meet the needs of busy families. Sessions can be scheduled twice a week or more, with each session lasting 2 to 3 hours. This program welcomes children with autism aged 4 to 10 years old, and there is no upper age limit for participation.
